Sheila Phillips, Owner/Veterinarian, Green Pastures Veterinary Services
"One of the best pieces of advice I was given in vet school was: Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. This can be applied to all facets of agriculture. While there are many factors we cannot control-weather, fertilizer/grain/hay/fuel prices, etc., we always have to find ways to persevere. The next most important piece of advice I would give would be to invest in our youth. They are the future, and none of us got to where we are on our own. Third, HAVE FUN!"
What would we do without veterinarians? Nominated for her exceptional career and skill, Sheila Phillips is the owner of Green Pastures Veterinary Services. We wanted to interview her and get the entire story of her veterinarian journey!
How long have you been with your organization, and what other roles have you held?
"I started this business in the fall of 2021 and have been the sole proprietor since. We offer relief veterinary services as well as at-home euthanasia for both large and small animals. Prior to that, I worked in a mixed animal rural practice for six years. I loved it!"
How did you become interested in agriculture/working in agriculture?
"I grew up on a small family farm bustling with all kinds of critters. I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine, and I fell in love with the veterinary field through a high school mentorship program at the age of 16. I have never looked back."
What have been your greatest achievements?
"Murray State Presidential Scholar, Outstanding Senior Woman Hutson School of Agriculture, Murray State Top 22 under 40 (class of 2023), serving two terms on the executive council for the Murray State Hutson School of Agriculture Alumni Association. Aside from accolades, I have mentored several pre-vet/vet tech and veterinary students since my own graduation from veterinary school. I am passionate about leaving this profession better than we found it, raising awareness for mental health, and raising the next generation of veterinary professionals. It is very rewarding for me to see these students pursue successful careers in their chosen fields."
