Sustainable Berea

Sustainable Berea is a group of citizens of Berea, KY whose goal is to support and participate in the development of a resilient local food system

Founded in 2005, Sustainable Berea is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides education – workshops, demonstrations, presentations, videos, literature – and material support such as seeds, starts, raised beds, and fruit trees to households wishing to grow some of their own food.

The centerpiece of our work is the Berea Urban Farm, a 1.4-acre educational market garden.

Our outreach programs include the annual Victory Garden Blitz, Backyard Beekeepers, Neighborhood Perennials Project, Berea Urban Agriculture District, and Harvesting Hope – a job skills program for women in recovery from opioid addiction.

We are adapting these programs to the constraints of the pandemic by substituting online events for on-farm activities and providing more material and educational support to households to help them “grow at home.”

Resilient Roots

Resilient Roots is led by clinical herbalist Lauren Kallmeyer with a mission to make herbal medicine affordable and accessible to all. She grows a wide variety of medicinal and culinary herbs on the land she stewards in Berea, KY. She also teaches herbal medicine-making workshops and offers private consultations for people seeking to improve their health with herbs.

The "All Seasons" Community Supported Herbalism project offers a box of 3-4 medicinal herb products on a seasonal basis, four times per year. Subscribers can join at any time. Shipping is available, or customers can pick up their share in Berea and Frankfort.
